More dental related stuff

Here’s another article up in Intelligent Dental:

Orthodontic braces has been around for more than 50 years and even till now, it remain as the most popular choice in straightening crooked teeth by dental professionals. It is the safest method available and produces ‘true’ tooth straightening unlike teeth crowns or teeth veneers which simply masks the problem.

On another note, our exams are 25 days away. Omg. Someone just put it into context, like I didn’t bother counting, and it just hit me like a massive rock. I’m so much more motivated to go to library tomorrow. Argh. So scary. 7 subs in 25 days. I can already see myself not sleeping. 24 hours a day is simply not enough!!!! T___T I feel like crying. Why didn’t I study hard before? WHYYYYYY? Plox plox let me pass 4th year! Have a feeling that praying alone will not get me anywhere. Gotta study. Bye.

Online studying

Don’t you love it when notes are like soooooo fun and stimulating and that you actually enjoyed learning? Normally there’s no such luck for me, any form of words outside the lines of jokes, clothes and makeup bore me to death. But recently found a website, it’s a blog actually, written by an endodontist. The dental related posts in there are really entertaining, and for the first time I actually bother reading journals cited in the post to learn more about what the endodontist is talking about. The irony when I saw a citation for invasive cervical resoprtion by Prof Heithersay. I remembered I barely skimmed through it while he was giving the lecture, fearing that my name will be called for the question presentation. Cause I turned up late from endo clinic, I actually managed to skip that bit (apparently Jo got called? bad bad luck) so I stopped reading lol. Anyway, I better go back and do more studying. With the site I mean, because I’ll probably die of ‘paper overload’ if I actually look at our endo notes for the exam. Bah FML.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival

I haven’t been blogging for the longest time omg! Been very lazy lately. But I’m sure everyone’s busy with their things, so no one’s actually checking this, so I’m all good ^^. No one will know I dissapeared! Anyway, I’m the the midst of a holiday break, one short week. Kinda sad as always. And as always, haven’t been doing much except busy catching up with friends and it’s oh-so-tiring. I think I’m getting old. I just can’t get enough of sleeping…. Yet my dark circles are growing like there’s no tomorrow mehhhh FML. And went to my ortho appt in the wee hours of this morning – so dissapointed when I found out I’ll only be able to take off my braces next year cos it’ll be ready just before the year ends, and I just miss the boat. HOW FREAKING SAD. Oh well, not like I hate braces. It never really bother me except after meals, kind of gross having bits of everything stuck in between your teeth, especially when someone asks for a picture after meals, worse still, in between meals. How rude! Lol. I guess you never realised these things till you experience it yourself. But it’s nothing big la. Anyway. Selamat belated Hari Raya everyone, kinda late, but it’s on myFacebook so I should be exempted! And Happy Mid-Autumn Festival everyone! Please burn more lanterns and stuff yourself with MORE mooncakes on my behalf, thank you very much. I’m gonna try celebrate it this year in Elder’s Park where there’s this OZAsia festival going on, a free event, yippeee, and there’s gonna be fireworks too! Hopefully it doesn’t rain that day, but probably will. But a cold zhong qiu jie, kinda fun. Can you believe after all these years, this is gonna be my first time seeing anything remotely close to a lantern in Adelaide? Le sigh. I’ve been what you call, katak di dalam tempurung (or was it di bawah?). Then there’s the earthquake in Msia again, well not really IN Malaysia, but kinda affected it all the way from Indonesia. The last time it happened, my friends called me up and go, did you feel it? I was like…. uh.. sleeping la. LOLOL. Missed out on the tremors!!!! Oh well, not like it’s a good thing, I think it will probably scare the shit out of me. So ignorance IS bliss. I have this weekend all planned out, yayness! Not too good on my $$$$$ but oh well, should enjoy my break before the official crunch for exams begin. It felt like I just sat for my sem 1 paper not long ago. Time is really flying on me. 6 weeks till final exams. Jia you jia you jia you!

Stupidity rules all

s0hMood > *fat*

I haven’t been blogging for the longest time that I almost forgot my login details =( Anyway, the usual reasons for not blogging, one being I’m too busy to blog (i.e In Malaysia), which I’m not and second reason being, I’m too free to blog. Like I could talk about a million things and bore you to death, but I’ve decided to spare your lives so please thanked me. Now that you’re in this page, let me get back to boring you to death all over again. Sigh. Why is my life so uneventful? Actually that’s kind of ironic considering I haven’t been going out on weekends more consistently than I had and it still feels like I’ve done nothing. Two months ago this time, I’m like a loser sitting around the pool table and now I go there everyweek (almost) and actually play (GASPS) without fail. Why like that? And I don’t even like it all that much. The only thing I like about it is cheap entertainment. But my friends are really into it, so I mah just tag along. It’s just that I go so often I feel like all of a sudden, I seemed like I’m so into it.

Adelaide is such a small place really. Not that anything happened or what, that’s just a random statement, and it is a fact. I’m just saying it cause I’ve been walking around town looking like an idiot holding a traffic light, except the colour being blue (my clinic coat). Sigh, the miseries of a dental student. I was in clinic helping out and when I left, I made sure I have everything: watch – check, pens in pocket – check. And that’s where it went wrong. For some stupid idiotic reason, I’ve placed my pen in my clinic coat front pocket (for those who don’tknow, it’s right in front of the left chest) without the cap on. And that is one  bloody green pen which so happened to be water soluble. And I did not just do that once. I did that with the other pen but I realised it early enough – but it was a ballpoint anyway so didn’t matter much. But this second one leaked over my pocket making me looked so – green. Sorry, I have very poor vocabulary but that’s not the point. So there’s this big patch and I was like shit, what if it stains it forever! I cannot possibly wait until the laundry time to wash it cause that’ll be in the weekends, meaning I have to live with the patch for two more days, three more clinics and I refused to look like that in front of my patient.

Anyway, so I thought it should be easy. Like any curry stain, just use a wet tissue and wipe it clean, done? So I did the same old trick and guessed what, it didn’t work AT ALL. Sigh. I don’t know whether it was the water soluble ink or the fact that the tissue was too wet, whatever, the moment my coat got wet, the greenish colour just spreaded all around the wet spot like an abscess wtfish! I swear I actually scremed fuck out loud in my brain. Panic panic. I have ortho clinic tomorrow and the last thing I need is kids mocking me and my dirty coat ok! So I quickly removed the tissue to prevent further damage, and guess what again? It made it worse. Sigh. The water dripped all over my coat and proceeded to spot it with green patches like a hulkish damaltian. You get ME? Now that is no normal eef. It’s like triple eff T___T

The only thing left for me to do is to throw the damn thing in the sink and soaked the ENTIRE coat with water and brush it with hand soap. Luckily for me, the stains all came off la. But still, such traumatic experience! So for those who saw a coat hanging in the locker room for no effing reason, that’s mine. For those who also happened to see a weird person walking around Rundle with a wet coat, that’s me. Sadly. I even went to Wollies with it. I swear the entire aisle of shoppers were judging me. Even the checkout chick was judging me T____T Oh well. So that ends my stupidity. Hopefully.

Dental myths

s0hMood > *discouraged*

After getting my braces, I became lazier in my brushing routine. In a sense. Like when I’m home, I have to brush in the morning, after lunch, after dinner and if I do have a snack before bed, then I have to brush another time before bed. Damn the big ass plastic brackets. Anyway. So I became lazy and so I avoided having snacks after dinner. But I have a habit of drinking milk with milo before bed. So to prevent the need to brush, I didn’t add milo and just drink the milk as it is. Why? Because milk contains calcium so it can’t be bad to leave it overnight right? I mean, it’s like a lighter fluid version of tooth mousse. So surely if anything, it will only do my teeth good! Boy am I wrong. I was reading random news and came accross this.

MILK’S GOOD BEFORE BED . . . MYTH
Sesame Street taught us many things, like vampires being great accountants, it was wrong about milk before bed. “It’s loaded with vitamin D and calcium, which build strong teeth, but it’s also packed with natural sugar lactose,” says the British Dental Health Foundation’s Leigh Greenwood. “Drink it before bed and your teeth will be coated with it. Over time, this will cause cavities. Drink your dairy at least an hour before bed so you have time to brush before hitting the hay.”

I feel like a dumbass. Who’s the dental student again???? >.< I never thought milk has sugar in it. Afterall, it doesn’t taste SWEET at all, which is why I added milo in the first place. So I’ve been causing demineralisation in my teeth all this while, thinking that I am actually remineralising. Zzz. This can only mean one thing. More tooth mousse application from now on. Sigh. I hate applying it. It doesn’t taste bad or anything, just I don’t like having stuff in my mouth before I sleep kind of thing? Btw, is that the same Greenwood I know? Hmmm……

Other things I found interesting:

A SMILE IS CAREER-PIVOTAL . . . HIT
Bad teeth can really leave you down in the mouth. Researchers from King’s College London found that the whiter your smile, the more attractive and successful your colleagues rate you. The dentally challenged likes of Shane MacGowan are apparently perceived as less clever, less popular and less well-adjusted than their well-capped peers.

Wow. Shit. My teeth aren’t exactly white. It’s yellow lor. How how how? Now you all will rate me as less successful and less attractive!! But I don’t want to bleach my teeth. It gives it the fake white appearance. Hmm. Plus it thins out enamel, and it is already very thin as it is thank you very much – which is why it appears yellowish. So if I bleach -> white -> thin enamel, dentine show through -> yellow -> bleach. Wah. It’s like a viscious cycle.

LEMON JUICE WHITENS . . . MYTH
Forget those money-saving tips; lemon juice won’t do as cheap substitute for teeth-whitening treatment. “Lemon juice is an acid,” says Goolnik. “So as it takes away stains it’ll be taking a bit of your tooth with them.”

Huh? I thought bleaching uses acid too. Stronger one even. So doesn’t that make them the same thing? Confused. Hmm.

FRUIT MEANS FILLINGS . . . MYTH
It’s bad-mouthed for harbouring more acid than the crowd at a Pink Floyd reunion gig, but not all fruit’s bad for your pegs. A compound in cranberries stops bacteria clinging to teeth, cutting plaque deposits by 80 per cent, according to the University of Rochester Medical Centre in New York. If you can’t get fresh, go for sugar-free dried cranberries.

Wow, cranberry is the fruit from NOW on. But where to find? Maybe they should include cranberries in toothpaste from now on. Lol. Now if you would excuse me. Need to hunt for some cranberries.

Viv pre-Bday Bash

s0hMood > *tired*

I think I’m really not made for clubbing. This morning I woke up with aching shoulders. Not to say that they really hurt la, just that they felt kind of tight. Like after a whole night of studying. So to speak, I’m not made for studying too? HAHAH. Bad joke. Anyway. Yesterday was Viv’s pre-bday bash at HQ. It’s so damn crowded and the music is so damn loud I swear I was going deaf. 2 casualties for the night. Chian almost went blind. Xyn almost ‘kwang dai’ (Monnlight Resonance, 2008). But both managed to recover unscathe and so they continued parteying. Hard core. Okla, not writing too much, let’s move on to pixies.

Now, a little trivia for you dent geeks. Do you know, diagnosis in BM is called diagnosa? Tooth filling = Tampalan gigi. HAHAHA WTF. Prostetik (pembekalan/ pembaikan gigi palsu). Okla, that’s a bit normal. Endodontik (rawatan akar gigi). This also not too bad. Now what the heck is Pembedahan kecil mulut? Huhhhhh???? And the ultimate dotz of all, scaling is……………………. penskaleran *ROFL*.Omg. Even looking at the government website makes my head spined. It’s all in Malay and I have not bloody read a single BM sentence since like.. 5 years ago???? Holy. I planned to do my selective in Malaysia during the coming holidays cause the 4th year schedule is a real bitch. But looking at it now, good luck to me in establishing any form of contact with the Jabatan side to setup a program.  Zzz…
